Bombay chutney recipe / Besan chutney recipe

Bombay chutney | Besan chutney is a simple and easy side dish for idli and dosa. Though it is named chutney it resembles curry or a kuzhambu dish. It is made with gram flour / besan flour, onions, tomatoes and Indian spices.

Preparation

Finely chop onions, green chillies and tomatoes.

Peel garlic pods and keep aside.

Mix 1 tbsp of gram flour with water without any lumps.

Heat oil in a kadai and add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds crackle, add chana dal and split urad dal.

Once the dals are browned, add chopped onions, green chillies and curry leaves. Saute till onions are browned.

Add tomatoes and saute for a few minutes.

Now add turmeric powder and red chilli powder and saute for a few seconds.

Cook till tomatoes turn mushy.

Meanwhile take gram flour in a bowl, add water mix thoroughly without any lumps with the help of a mix. 

Now add the gram flour mixture and water. Mix everything together and bring it to boil. Add water to bring desired consistency.

Once boiled simmer for 5 minutes.

Garnish with coriander leaves .

Serve hot.

Recipe notes

  • Use good quality besan / chickpea / gram flour.
  • While making the besan flour mixture, whisk it to a lump free smooth paste.
  • This chutney thickens on cooling, hence adjust the consistency accordingly.
