How to make samba rava upma
Samba rava / gothuma rava / broken wheat / dalia
Samba rava / Gothuma rava upma is a nourishing, easy to make and a wholesome breakfast. The nutritional content can be increased by adding additional veggies.

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds crackle, add chana dal and split urad dal.

Add finely chopped onions, slit green chillies and curry leaves. Saute till onions are browned.

Add chopped tomatoes. Cook till tomatoes turn mushy.

Add the samba rava / broken wheat and saute in low flame till the rava is roasted.

It might take 1 to 2 minutes. Take care not to burn the rava.

Add water little by little. Keep stirring while adding water so that no lumps are formed. Add required salt.

Once water comes to a boil close the pan and simmer till all the water is absorbed.

Switch off the stove and leave it undisturbed for 10 minutes so that rava swells and becomes fluffy.

Serve hot or warm with coconut chutney / curd / sugar / sambar.

Samba Rava Upma / Broken Wheat Upma
Ingredients
- 2 to 3 tbsp oil
- ¼ tsp mustard seeds
- ¼ tsp split urad dal
- ¼ tsp chana dal
- 1 sprig of curry leaves
- 1 small onion
- 2 green chillies
- 1 small tomato
- 1 cup samba rava / broken wheat
- 3 ¼ cups water
- Salt to taste

Notes
- You can even make this upma in a pressure cooker. Cook it for 2 whistles on a medium flame and let the pressure release naturally.
- Add vegetables like carrot, green peas, cabbage to make vegetable dalia upma.
- You can even dry roast the rava separately and use it.
