Dal Fry is a popular and staple Indian recipe that can be made with toor dal ( pigeon pea lentils), moong dal, chana dal, masoor dal or even mixed dal.
Dry roast the moong dal till it turns aromatic, wash thoroughly and soak in water for 10 mins.
Meanwhile chop onions, tomatoes and peel garlic.
In a pressure cooker add soaked moong dal, tomatoes, garlic, 1 green chilli, turmeric powder, castor oil and 1 ½ cups of water. Cook on high flame for 3 whistles and simmer for 10 minutes. Allow the pressure to release naturally.
While the pressure releases, in a pan heat 2 tbsp of ghee, add the ingredients to temper.
Then add onions and green chillies and saute till onions turn translucent.
Once the onions are cooked, transfer the tadka mixture into the pressure cooker containing dal.
Mix well and simmer for 5 minutes.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
Notes
I have kept this recipe simple by just adding green chillies for the heat. You can also add red chillies, red chilli powder and garam masala to make dhaba style dal fry.
